Credit Card Processing Fees Explained: What You're Actually Paying
Credit card processing fees are one of the most misunderstood costs in small business. Merchants see a percentage taken from every transaction and often do not understand what that money pays for, why it varies by card type, or how to reduce it.
The Four Parties in Every Transaction
Understanding fees requires understanding the flow of money:
- Your customer's bank (issuing bank) — issued the credit card and sets the interchange rate
- The card network (Visa, Mastercard) — provides the infrastructure and takes an assessment fee
- Your bank or processor (acquiring bank) — processes transactions on your behalf
- You (the merchant) — pay all three parties through what appears as one blended rate
The Three Layers of Fees
Interchange fees are set by Visa and Mastercard and paid to the issuing bank. These are the largest component of processing fees and are non-negotiable. They vary by card type: rewards cards cost more to process than basic debit cards. Typical interchange: 1.5-2.5% for consumer credit cards, 0.05-0.3% for debit cards.
Assessment fees go to the card network (Visa, Mastercard). Typically 0.1-0.15% per transaction.
Processor markup is what your payment processor charges above interchange and assessments. This is the only fee that is actually negotiable.
Pricing Models
Flat rate: One blended rate for all cards (e.g., Stripe's 2.9% + $0.30, Square's 2.6% + $0.10). Predictable but often costs more on low-value, low-reward cards than interchange-plus.
Interchange-plus: Interchange + fixed markup (e.g., interchange + 0.5% + $0.10). More transparent and often cheaper for higher-volume merchants. Harder to compare across processors.
Tiered pricing: Transactions bucketed into qualified/mid-qualified/non-qualified tiers with different rates. Common from traditional merchant services providers. Often least transparent.
How to Reduce Your Processing Costs
- Encourage debit card payments (lower interchange than credit)
- Enter card data manually less often (card-present rates are lower)
- Use address verification (reduces non-qualified downgrades)
- Negotiate your processor markup if processing over $10,000/month
- Compare interchange-plus quotes once you have volume data
The Real Cost of Cash Discounting
Some merchants add a surcharge for credit card payments to offset fees. Regulations vary by state, and implementation can irritate customers. Carefully consider whether the fee recovery is worth the friction before implementing.
